Q: What are the benefits of bellydancing? 
A: Bellydancing provides a low-impact cardio workout which burns between 300 and 500 calories per hr, strengthens pelvic floor muscles as well as arms, abs, thighs and buns, and improves bone density, posture, and stamina. 

Q: Can anyone take a bellydancing class? Do I need dance experience? 
A: Anyone can take a class, provided your doctor approves. Bellydancing, and most other forms of dance we offer, is for any age, any size, and it can be modified for any fitness level. There is no experience necessary for our beginner classes. 

Q: How does dance compare with a fitness routine in a gym or other regular exercise facility? 
A: Dance is a wonderful addition to a regular gym workout. Think of your regular exercise program as your "little black dress" and dance fitness as your glittery accessory. Anytime you rely on only one fitness routine, your body can plateau, so it makes sense to have several forms of exercise. In addition, dance can help increase your natural joint lubrication, range of motion, and flexibility. So you are less prone to injury during weight lifting, aerobics, etc. 

Q: What can dance do for my body image? 
A: A recent study has shown that 93% of women taking a bellydance class were more accepting of their bodies. The art of dance gives you an appreciation of your unique body type and helps you focus more on what your body can DO rather than on parts that you don't like. When you learn to appreciate your uniqueness, it's so much easier to love yourself, "jiggles" and all! 

Q: Isn't Bellydancing just a kind of seductive entertainment performed by Harem girls? 
A: That is a myth; bellydancing was created for women by women in a supportive environment, and it was designed as an exercise to prepare your body for childbirth and to heal it afterwards. This is how we teach it. You can choose to entertain if you wish. 

Q: What if I'm just not interested in bellydance. Are there other dance workouts I can try for fitness benefits? 
A: Other forms of dance provide wonderful health benefits as well. Dance for Weight Loss is a cardio workout using several types of dance steps and high energy modern music. Masala Bhangra, or Indian Hip-hop, has been listed as one of the top six cardiovascular dance workouts available. Salsa, featuring Mambo, cha-cha-cha, etc., is an excellent workout for abs, hips, thighs, and buns. Appalachian Clogging is a high energy cardiovascular class which strengthens legs, hips and thighs and burns tons of calories! If you're not interested in dance at all but want all the cardio and strength benefits, try Hoopercise! It's an innovative workout using special comfort fitness hoops.

Q: How do I get started? 
A: It's easy! Simply choose the class you wish to take, call to ensure space availability, show up, and have fun! 

Q: When and how do I pay? 
A: You may pay on the first day of class, or pre-register by credit card. 

Q: How much does it cost? 
A: Dance classes: Regular evening classes are $45 per month or $15 / drop-in. Regular daytime classes are $40 per month, or $12 drop-in. Fitness classes: $25/mo or $8/drop-in. Daytime half hour "workout" classes are $5 each There are discounts for mothers/daughters and high school student discounts. 

Q: Can I drop in to any class anytime? 
A: As long as there is room, drop-ins are welcome! Please call ahead for space availability, however, as some classes have a waiting list. 

Q: What is your cancellation policy? 
A: Sometimes we must cancel class due to an instructor's illness or inclement weather. If we have cancelled the class, you will receive a make-up class. If you have pre-paid for a class and we must cancel it due to poor enrollment, we will either transfer you to another class or refund the portion of the class that you did not receive. This is the ONLY instance in which Beledi will issue a refund. 

Q: What if I have paid for the month, but must miss one class? 
A: If you give us a courtesy call to inform us of your absence, we will be able to issue you one make-up class during this month or discount your fee for the next month. If you do not call, our policy will not allow a make-up class. Exceptions may be made in cases of emergency, providing we are notified within 15 days. 

Q: What is your inclement weather policy? 
A: If Traverse City Schools are closed due to weather, please call ahead to make sure your class is proceeding as scheduled. If NMC is closed, Beledi will close as well.

    Class Descriptions

    bBellydance for pregnancy

    NEW!  This gentle class is just for toning your body to prepare for the blessed event.  Honor your feminine abilities and develop your body's rhythm with veteran dancer, expectant mom, and instructor Sadzi!  Offered twice per month only.

    Partner/Couples Dance Class

    If you've ever felt foolish on the dance floor, fear no more! Men and women learn to lead and follow in a social dance situation.  We'll cover several different dance styles. Hour long classes are $15 per couple, per week.   If you don't have a partner we'll try to find you one! Need a date idea tonight? Come dance with us! Instructors: Dave and Catherine

    Salsa For Lunch

    Basic mambo and cha-cha steps are combined for a half hour workout, including warm-up and cool-down.  Prepare to spice up your day for just $5! Instructor: Penny

    Beginner Bellydance Goddess 

    Basic moves for beginners of any age, any size, any fitness level. In this gentle class, you will learn to become good friends with your body just the way it is, while strengthening, toning, and gaining flexibility. Develop a love for yourself and an appreciation for your unique body. Come prepared to have fun and experience an amazing workout and self-esteem booster! Instructor: Penny 

     

     Intermediate Bellydance

    Use the basic moves you learned in beginner's class and add to them for a more intense experience! Learn to work with  zills, and put your moves together to learn combinations. Come with bells (and coins) on and let yourself "feel like a woman!" Basic beginner's a prerequisite. Instructors: Sharon, Penny, Catherine 

     Belly-robics 

    This is a lunchtime workout combining aerobics with bellydance moves.  Little to no impact, including cardio, belly-robics focuses on those problem areas, from butts & guts to arms and thighs.  Just $5 for this half hour class. Instructor: Penny

    Tribal Bellydance

    A fusion of many cultural bellydance styles, this dance discipline is earthy, sinewy, and slightly gothic.  Slow, rhythmic movements increase muscle tone and deliver a great low-impact workout. Instructor: Amira

    Inner goddess bellydance

    I invite you to journey with me on a quest for self-discovery.  This class is based on the premise that there is a graceful goddess within everyone, all you have to do is find her!  Learn to love yourself and the body you're in, and free your mind and inhibitions.  Beginner level. Instructor: Penny

    DANCE FOR WEIGHT LOSS

    Wanna sweat?  Is fitness your goal?  Then this is the class for you! Kelly's background as both a dance instructor and a personal trainer make her the perfect instructor to get you fit. Upbeat music and some hip-hopping steps will provide a lot of fun while you burn those calories!

    HOOPERCISE! tm

    THE LATEST CRAZE IN FITNESS! A new, innovative workout using hand-made Hoopini tm comfort fitness hoops. You'll be surprised at how fun it is to tone those core muscles! Instructor:  Maryanne

     CABARET

    Tradition upbeat style of bellydance, including kicks and turns and high energy movements.  Level 2 includes choreography of the basic moves learned in level 1. Instructor: Merrie

    P.U.R.E. 

    PURE is a collective of dancers taking music and dance into the streets for the purpose of healing and peace. PURE's goal is to affect positive change within ourselves, each other, with the audience and greater society. Michigan was chosen as the first outside state to host P.U.R.E.!
